Your Music - Rooftop Runners

Submit Your Music

This weeks Your Music selection comes from a pair of Canadian brothers (not street slang, but siblings) who are living and making music in Germany.  Two weeks away from releasing their first EP, lets take a look and listen at Roof Top Runners.

Rooftop Runners is the Indy, Trip-Pop brother duo Benedikt and Tobias MacIsaac out of Berlin, Germany.  Born and raised in British Columbia, the two grew up in a musical family complete with professional violinists, singers, flutists and more.  Taught by their Dad and Aunts, Ben & Tobi played regularly with family and friends, often Celtic music and traditional Zimbabwe Marimba, later joining a band in high school.

At the age of 14 and 15 their attention turned towards dance and they moved to Toronto to attend the National Ballet School of Canada.  This would lead Ben to Holland to study and work in choreography and Tobi to Germany where he found work as a dancer in Hamburg.  Neither would lose their interest in music and when the itch grew strong enough they decided to drop everything else, join up in Berlin, and write some songs.

Although Ben still does some choreography on the side, creating dance pieces that synergize music, visuals and movement, and Tobi dances for an independent theater as well as engaging in the Berlin street dance scene, both brothers are “Fully committed to our music right now”.

We Are Here was recorded in 3 days, a simple almost minimalist approach, involving a guitar, vocals, a piano and a beat machine.  It is meant as “both an affirmation and a promise that RTR has arrived and they are here to stay.”

The local Berlin music scene has been kind to RTR.  They have been gaining exposure in various media spotlights and their fan base is growing.  Preceding the release of their EP, a UK/German tour has been underway since Jan, which has landed them in Stuttgart & Neuchatel among other cities so far and has them heading to London, Liverpool and Hamburg later this month (March 3’rd for Hamburg).

I asked the pair what it was like being in a band as brothers, and their answer did not surprise me:

“It’s intense, inspiring, energizing, frustrating and one hell of a awesome experience”

I’m sure it’s all of those things and more.

We Are Here is scheduled for release on April 3’rd.  You can catch up with Benedikt and Tobias on Rooftop Runners Website

Circus Music

Thump Records

The first song I posted on Music Cavity was the Dust Brothers circusy sounding ‘Setting Up a Fight’ from the Fight Club soundtrack.  That was on a Friday the 13’th and it seemed like an appropriate selection.  It was an off the top of my head decision, but it’s not like I had to do much considering to come up with the choice.  I have always been keen on circus & carnival music, especially bands that have been able to tie in the sounds of the big top with solid albumable songs.

I’ve always liked the image of the carnival.  Clowns & Carousels, Freaks & Carnys, and the colours and sounds that go with them.  Carnivals are a great theme in horror movies or B type movies and an even better theme in music.  Here’s some modern carney tunes for the fairgrounds:

Pure
‘Wagner’s Show’
Generation 6 Pack

The Gandharvas
‘Circus Song’
A Soap Bubble and Inertia

Blur
‘Debt Collector’
Park Life

Captain Spaulding by Simon Hayag

As a bonus, in case you missed it the first time, here is the Dust Brothers one again:

Friday Music

Rebbeca Black tries to ruin Friday’s

Sometimes music sounds better on Fridays.  O.K, almost always music sounds better on Fridays.  Most people learn to love Fridays early on in life, usually all those years you are in school you’re always looking ahead to Friday and your next weekend.  A good portion of people go on to jobs that are Monday to Friday so they can continue to look forward to those weekends.  Even for those people who work on the weekends I think there is still a bit of a mystique about them.  People act differently on Fridays, usually stress levels drop and anticipation levels rise, and it can affect everyone in general, even those who don’t work 9-5.  Listening to music at work probably sounds better Fridays too.  Here’s some Friday music to get you through to the weekend.

‘Off the Wagon’
The Beauty Process

Suicidal Tendencies
‘Beserk’

Music Cavity hopes you have a great Friday.

Knives Out!

Valentine’s Day (Tuesday) saw the release of Black Mass Hysteria, the first full length effort of the Polkadot Cadaver/Nothingface/Hellyeah members comprised side project Knives Out!

Singer Todd Smith (Dog Fashion Disco, Polkadot Cadaver) said of the album “The new album is our crowning achievement and exactly what we set out to be and sound like.  Heavy with groove and full of melody Knives Out! is a fresh, unique and completely original force, ready to lead the heavy hard rock genre into the future.”

Knives Out! formed in 2008 and put out the EP The Rough Cuts in 2010.

‘Swollen Mistress’
The Rough Cuts

Similar in sound to Dog Fashion Disco at times, Todd’s vocals and the music surrounding them are more straight forward (and relentless) rock then his other projects, which should appeal to more traditional hard rock fans.  Black Mass Hysteria gets loud and stays there.

Dinosaur Jr Jr

The Electronic Anthology Project, started in 2010 by Built to Spill members Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson, first took a handful of Built to Spill songs and turned them into 80’sish style Synth-Pop.  Now they have joined up with J Mascis and turned their attention towards Dinosuar Jr.  9 of the Jr’s songs have received the facelift (or de-lift as it may be) and are scheduled to be released in a limited run vinyl on April 21 at Record Store Day.  Below you can find a link to the reconstructed ‘Tarpit’ from 1987’s Your Living All Over Me, on Pitchfork’s site.  But first lets take a listen to the original:

Polyphonic Wagon Spree

VDub Sessions Van

The Polyphonic Spree, who are currently engaged in a mini tour of the Southern States, found some time in between their 10 gigs in 11 nights to squeeze a dozen members into the VDub van for a mobile recording session of their smile inducing song ‘It’s the Sun’  As you can tell from the video, it takes a lot to get these folks down.

The VDub Sessions is the promotional vehicle (pun) of Fowler Volkswagon in Norman Oklahoma, operated by General Manager Jonathan Fowler.  As well as supporting several local music events and artists, Fowler invites various musicians into the van to record while cruising the open road, similar in style to the Black Cab Sessions.

As a bonus check out this live version of the song:

Your Music - Corey Nichols

Submit Your Music

Earlier this month I posted a two part feature on Dax Riggs Part 1 Part 2.  In part 1 I included an excellent graphite drawing of Dax by Corey Nichols.  When I contacted Corey to ask permission to use the drawing, I found out that he has more talent on top of what he displayed in his artwork.  He is also an upcoming musician on the verge of releasing his first EP.  Today we take a look at a couple of songs from his forthcoming album.

Corey Nichols is a Louisiana musician who takes vibes from the “rustic swamp lands” and adds it to his music.  Using standard Blues as his base, he adds elements of Electronics and Indy Rock for a more modern feel.  In his first solo venture Corey hopes to tap some of the spirits of Blues past.

Corey shared some of this thoughts on the EP with us.  “This album is going to be about music as art.  I’m not chasing a genre and forcing ideas to make it belong.  It’s going to be a set of handpicked songs, all with the intention of bringing you to another place and invoking emotion.  When the song ends, I want it to remain with you, whether that is bringing you joy or facing pain, you can listen to the music and really feel it.”

Corey was recently ranked #1 in What’s Hot on Reverbnation and is set to become the feature musician on the main page starting March 20’th Corey Nichols ReverbNation.  He is currently #1 on the local Blues charts.  He has also gotten a lot of positive feedback on Facebook and You Tube in addition to RN.  I asked him what he though of all that.

“I was really shocked and humbled by the response.  Waking up and having emails from Sweden, Australia and Finland all talking about the music and the vocals.  It’s more than I expected.  Sometimes doing something different doesn’t sit well with people.  Some people almost feel the need to be able to make a comparison to music in order to appreciate it, but so far the feedback has been fantastic.”

Keep an eye out for the self-titled EP in the next few months.  You can follow Corey at ReverbNation or on his Facebook page.

Also on Corey’s personal label i1, is friend Kyrt Gates of ‘Love here Killer’.
Says Corey “This music has been Kyrts love child for years, his love and hate, his joy and pain.  His work is new wave indie.  It’s something you can dance to, love or kill too.  Arrangements tie in Bowie, Prince, Bauhaus…It’s just worth checking out for yourself.”

Love her Killer is also scheduled for a mid-year release.

A Little Novelty

Michigan State Police

From silly lyrics and childish melodies, to strange costumes and stage shows, to adult or uncomfortable content, there is a lot of novelty in music.  Some use gimmicks to try and stand out, others are just trying to be funny, while some deliberately try to be crass or ‘push the envelope’.  Usually you can tell when it is forced vs when it is natural and more times then not it is forced.  I have no interest in presenting the most outlandish music (or to justify some of the forced ones) and won’t be going down the ‘stupid’ path, so if you are looking for new music for your Hunt Camp then you’ll have to go elsewhere.

That said, let’s take a look at a few songs that add some novelty along the way.

Revolting Cocks
‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy’
Linger Ficken’ Good
(Rod Stewart cover with ‘enhanced’ lyrics)

Your Favorite Martian (with WAX)
‘Stalkin Your Mom’
Stalkin Your Mom (Single)

King Missil
‘Detachable Penis’
Happy Hour

Big $ Rich
‘Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy’
